118,842 Persons Asked for International Protection in Spain in 2022

According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, the Asylum and Refugee Office received 118.842 international protection applications last year.

This is 81.5 percent more than the 2021 registration of 65,482 applications.

These data also reveal that Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru were the top countries of origin for applicants to international protection in Spain in 2022, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to the country of submission, the Community of Madrid is the top-ranked autonomous community with the highest number of applications. It has 47,658 applications. Andalusia has 11,722 applications and Catalonia has 10,396.

The total number of international protection files that the Ministry of the Interior has resolved in 2022 is 91,369, an increase of 27.2 percent compared to 2021 when only 71,833 files had been resolved.

The number of requests for stateless status resolutions increased by 38 percent last year to 1192 files.

The Ministry released the following statement: "Statelessness" is a procedure that identifies among the applicants persons who are not considered to be nationals by any State in accordance its legislation and state that they do not have nationality in accordance the provisions of the Convention on the Status of Stateless Persons held in New York on Sept 28, 1954.

In 2022, 161,037 people requested temporary protection from the Office of Asylum and Refugees in order to help them flee the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

These data show that Spain ranks fifth in Europe for providing the most temporary protection to residents and citizens of Ukraine.

Spanish authorities announced that they had provided temporary protection for more than 160,000 Ukrainian refugees in the conflict since its beginning at the end of December 2012.

Data from the Spanish government show that women make up 63.47 percent of those who have received temporary protection in Spain. This is a total number of 102,034. Men account for 36.53 percent, or more specifically, a total total of 58,722.

A total of 33.69% of the population are minors and 25.33 percent are between 19-35 years of age. The study also shows that 34.17 percent of Ukrainians are between 36 and 64 years old, while 6.8% are over 65.
