Green Travel

American Airlines Enhances Investment in Sustainable Aviation

American Airlines has announced a conditional purchase agreement with ZeroAvia for 100 hydrogen-electric engines, aimed at powering regional jet aircraft with zero inflight emissions, aside from water vapor. This commitment marks a significant step towards achieving a low-carbon future in commercial aviation.

Strategic Partnership and Investment

Increased Investment in ZeroAvia

American Airlines has increased its investment in ZeroAvia by participating in the company's Series C financing round, following its initial investment in 2022. This engine agreement builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2022, highlighting a continued commitment to innovative, sustainable aviation technologies.

Development of Hydrogen-Electric Engines

ZeroAvia is at the forefront of developing hydrogen-electric (fuel cell-powered) engines for commercial aircraft. The company is currently flight testing a prototype for a 20-seat plane and is designing an engine for larger aircraft, such as the Bombardier CRJ700, which American Airlines operates on certain regional routes.

Commitment to Sustainability

Net-Zero Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050

American Airlines' CEO, Robert Isom, emphasized the importance of investing in alternative propulsion technologies to transition to a low-carbon future. This announcement aligns with American's aggressive goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Fleet Renewal and Sustainability Investments

American Airlines has undertaken extensive fleet renewal efforts, resulting in the youngest mainline fleet among major U.S. carriers. The airline has also made significant investments in sustainability, including an offtake agreement with Infinium for low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel and becoming the first customer of Graphyte’s permanent carbon removal process.

Technological Innovations

ZeroAvia's Hydrogen-Electric Engines

ZeroAvia's engines utilize hydrogen in fuel cells to generate electricity, which powers electric motors to turn the aircraft’s propellers. The only emission is low-temperature water vapor, offering a clean alternative to traditional jet fuel. Additionally, the lower intensity electrical systems may offer significant cost savings.

CEO Insights

Val Miftakhov, ZeroAvia’s Founder and CEO, highlighted the importance of American Airlines' support in driving innovation for clean aircraft propulsion. He expressed confidence that solutions for the largest airlines are within reach, heralding a clean future for flight.
