American Airlines Enhances AAdvantage® Program and Updates Bag Fees for a Better Travel Experience
American Airlines announces updates to the AAdvantage® program and bag fees, enhancing the travel experience and loyalty rewards for AAdvantage® members. Direct bookings now offer more benefits, with changes to how miles and Loyalty Points are earned and adjustments to bag fees for more convenience and savings.
American Airlines is revolutionizing the travel experience for AAdvantage® members by updating how miles and Loyalty Points are earned, starting May 1, 2024. Direct bookings with American and its airline partners now lead to more rewards, emphasizing the benefits of booking directly, such as same-day standby and Trip Credit for canceled flights. Additionally, changes to bag fees will be implemented for bookings made on or after February 20, yet AAdvantage® status members continue to enjoy complimentary bags.
The airline's commitment to providing the "best possible travel experience" includes simplified trip management, better fares, and rewarding loyalty more than ever. Vasu Raja, American's Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the convenience and rewards of direct bookings, aiming to make travel more magical and valuable.
Changes in earning miles and Loyalty Points will favor direct bookings and partnerships, including AAdvantage Business™ members, contracted corporate travelers, and preferred travel agencies. Basic Economy fare tickets will also earn miles and Loyalty Points only when booked directly with American or eligible partner airlines.
Moreover, AAdvantage® members will still earn through non-airline partners, expanding the ways to use miles for shopping, hotels, events, and more.
Adjustments to Ancillary Services and Bag Fees
For the first time since 2018, American adjusts its first and second checked bag fees for travel booked on or after Feb. 20. The revised fees are set at $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second, with distinctions for online and airport purchases, including domestic, Canada, and short-haul international flights. Despite these changes, certain AAdvantage® members and credit cardholders will maintain their complimentary bag benefits.
The airline also introduces a more favorable fee structure for oversize and overweight checked items, significantly reducing costs for customers. This new structure simplifies the fees, making it cheaper for items that exceed standard sizes by a small margin.
Ongoing Enhancements to the AAdvantage® Program
American Airlines continues to upgrade the AAdvantage® program, offering reduced costs for transferring miles, the option to use miles for Wi-Fi on select flights, and the ability to redeem miles for upgrades with airline partners in 2024. Additional benefits include the ability to cancel non-refundable Basic Economy tickets for a partial Trip Credit, complimentary same-day standby for earlier domestic flights starting March 1, and an extended period to use Trip Credit for AAdvantage® members.
American Airlines' updates to its AAdvantage® program and ancillary services aim to enrich the travel experience, reward loyalty, and provide significant savings and conveniences for its passengers.
