Amidst Cost of Living Crisis, Travelers Willing to Pay 10% More for Sustainable Journeys

News

Approximately 80% of travelers are willing to pay an additional 10% for sustainable travel attributes, even amidst the current cost of living crisis.

According to the Voice of the Consumer: Lifestyles Survey featured in Euromonitor's recently published Sustainable Travel Index 2023, 41% of travelers are open to paying over 30% extra for adventure and eco-friendly tourism.

The Sustainable Travel Index 2023 is dominated by Europe, securing the top 17 positions. Sweden retains its lead, with Finland in second place and Austria in third. Notably, Uruguay, a South American destination, has entered the top 20 for the first time, ascending by 15 ranks compared to the previous year.

Over the last five years, Egypt and the Maldives have exhibited the most noteworthy improvements. Egypt's resilient tourism industry has stood out, recovering from travel bans and the pandemic, resulting in increased average spending per arrival and benefiting local communities.

The city destination sustainability rankings by Euromonitor's Top City Destinations Index place Melbourne at the forefront. Melbourne aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2040 and is followed by Madrid and Seville from Spain, contributing to the Net Zero Cities initiative within the EU.

Melbourne's achievements in sustainability span various aspects, including retrofitting buildings to reduce carbon footprints, transitioning to renewable energy sources, greening streets, and hosting carbon-neutral events.

Australia, Iceland, and New Zealand emerge as the top three destinations in terms of sustainable tourism demand. These long-haul destinations benefit from extended stays, with New Zealand also excelling in regenerative tourism, leaving a positive legacy for future generations.

In light of the report's findings, Caroline Bremner, Head of Travel at Euromonitor International, emphasized the use of 56 indicators across seven pillars to assess sustainable travel performance among 99 countries. These indicators cover aspects like local happiness, social equity, environmental impact, and tourism infrastructure.

Bremner highlighted green technology and digitizing the traveler experience as pivotal in achieving the path to net zero. Collaborating with startups in the green tech sector could play a crucial role in shaping a more environmentally friendly and cleaner future for travel.
