Benidorm sees a spate of violence and makes tourists wonder if it is a safe destination anymore

News

These incidents are starting to make tourists and even authorities wonder if this is still an appropriate location for relaxing vacations.

Local news suggests the British suspects, aged 20 and 21, were placed in custody by Spanish police, and will most likely appear in a private court hearing during the following days.

Police closed the Strip area and sealed it off to the public.

Local newspaper Ahora Marina Baiza reported that two bar workers were stabbed by the two aggressive brit customers, that were just being thrown out.
An insider confirmed neither of the injured men are British, with one of them from Romania and the other from the Czech Republic.

At least one of the men is a bouncer at Beachcomber, where last night’s incident occurred, and the other is also a worker, although it was not immediately clear if he was also a doorman or PR staff.

One of the victims suffered some serious injuries, being stabbed in the abdomen and was rushed to Hospital and taken to intensive care. The other was stabbed in the chest.

The source said: “One of the Brits was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and wounding and the other for an offence of making threats."

Is it now safe to travel to Bedidorm?

The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) have not updated their travel advice to Spain following the attack. However, the FCO have said that their staff are in touch with Spanish authorities following the Britons’ arrest.

Terrorists are “very likely” to try to carry out attacks in Spain, but the FCO explains that most travellers to the Mediterranean country experience no problems.
“Nearly 19 million British nationals visited Spain last year and most of them presented no sort of dangers.” the website said.

The FCO website provides cautions about crime in Spain: “Most visits to Spain are trouble-free, but you should be alert to the existence of street crime, especially thieves using distraction techniques,” it says.

“Thieves often work in teams of two or more people and tend to target money and passports. Don’t carry all your valuables in one place, and remember to keep a photocopy or scanned copy of your passport somewhere safe.”

Benidorm has recently suffered a huge drop in British tourists and Brexit is said to be to blame.

The hoteliers' association Hosbec reported a 15% drop in British tourists today, citing concerns over a no deal Brexit – where the UK will leave the EU without a specific plan on how to go forward – as the main reason.

It noted the number of holiday packages sold to Britons in January amounted to 46.000 in 2019, compared to 54.000 just 12 months before.
