Boat In Italy Flipped Over Killing Three People Following Whirlwind
Nineteen tourists escaped the violent storm accident unharmed, but divers and a helicopter are still combing Lake Maggiore for the missing twentieth.
Three dead people were found by Italian firemen on a lake in northern Italy after a tourist boat flipped during a severe storm yesterday.
On Monday, divers accompanied by a helicopter resumed their search for the last missing passenger from Sunday night's boat wreck on Lake Maggiore, in the Lombardy area.
Firefighters reported saving 19 lives. After the ship capsized at Lisanza on the lake's southern end, several survivors apparently made it to land or were saved by other vessels.
Attilio Fontana, head of the Lombardy region, blamed a whirlwind for the extremely terrible tragedy. Italian news outlet Varese News said that the ship was carrying 25 persons at the time of the incident.
The rescue helicopter could be seen hovering over turbulent waves with chairs and other debris floating below it in a recently released video taken by firemen.
As a result of the storm, the Malpensa Airport was also considerably affected by flight delays.
