A new survey shows that the historic port city in South Carolina, Charleston, is America's most expensive spring destination for accommodation.
Cheaphotels.org conducted a survey in May of this year to compare hotel rates at popular locations across the nation. The survey only included properties with a rating of 3 stars or higher and located near a city/town center or beach.
The cheapest double rooms in Charleston cost an average of $358 per room per night. Two Hawaiian resort towns Lahaina & Wailea were the second & third most expensive destinations with an average rate of $338 & $312 respectively.
Anna Maria Island, Florida, ranked 5th in terms of the most expensive destinations, with an average rate of $294 per night. Napa, and its neighboring Calistoga, were the most expensive destinations in California with an average rate of $290 per night.
Prices this year appear to be lower when compared with rates for spring 2022. Last spring, guests in Charleston had to pay $374 for the lowest priced room, which is $16 more expensive than this year. In some places, the rates have even dropped further.
According to the survey, the average rates of hotels in the 20 most expensive spring destinations fell by 11%. This indicates that the demand for hotel accommodations has also decreased compared to spring 2022 when rates soared across the board following the drastically reduced economic activity in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Below is a list of the 10 most expensive destinations in the US for spring. Prices displayed next to each destination represent the average price for the most affordable double room available for the period May 1-31, 2023.
