European Island – The Cellphone Stickers For Tourists Strategy

News

Finland is filled with fantastic tourist destinations where locals and visitors alike may relax and rejuvenate in the splendour of nature.

And now, one Finnish island has “banned” cellphone use this summer in an effort to encourage visitors to take in the natural beauty surrounding them.

Ulko-Tammio is located in the eastern Gulf of Finland, between the cities of Kotka and Hamina and just a few kilometers from Finland's coastal frontier with Russia. The gorgeous island is a national park that is deserted and home to a number of endangered species of birds and vegetation. While visiting the area, tourists are encouraged to observe the nature surrounding them, take hikes, enjoy the bird-watching tower and not use their phones.

Mats Selin, expert in island tourism, explained:

"The island of Ulko-Tammio, which is located off the coast of Hamina, will be a phone-free area this summer. We want to urge [vacationers] to switch off their smart devices and to stop and genuinely enjoy the islands."

Stickers covering guests' phones and cameras will be provided to ease the transition away from electronic devices. However, because of the availability of mobile coverage on the island, you may find that you can't resist checking your phone even while you're trying to unplug.

Parks & Wildlife Finland, the organization in charge of the country's public lands and waterways, is certain that the campaign's participants will benefit in more ways than merely aesthetic ones.

The initiative aims to determine people to turn off their mobile phones, explore outdoors, meet new people face-to-face and increase happiness and well-being levels, as we all spend too much time on social media that even a little break might open up more time for trying new beautiful things.
