Eurostat Reveals That 879 million Trips Were Made Last Year

News

According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the numbers above show that there was a 23% increase in tourism trips last year compared with 2020. 713 million trips were made during this year.

Eurostat's most recent report indicates that the spread and evolution of Coronavirus and its variants has led to a shift toward domestic tourism. It emphasizes that citizens from European countries have spent around 85 percent of their travels in their home country, compared with 73% domestic trips in the pre-pandemic period.

"In 2021, trips made to other EU countries represented 12 percent of all tourism trips (compared to 11% in 2020 and 20% in 2019). The statement also notes that only 3% of all trips to destinations outside of the EU accounted for 3% of all trips, compared to 3% in 2020 and 8% in 2019.

In terms of night travel, domestic trips are shorter than trips to other countries. The report also noted that domestic night travel was 73% last year, as opposed to the 76 in 2020 and the 58 in pre-pandemic periods.

"Tourism statistics include both personal and professional trips." According to the statement, 8 percent of all trips reported in 2021 were business trips (compared to 9 per cent in 2020 or 11 per cent for 2019).

The number of trips for personal reasons also improved last year. It rose by 80 percent, or 811 million more trips than the level of 2019. This is compared to the 1.0 billion trips in 2019. The number of trips taken for professional reasons did not recover to the same extent as before the pandemic. It is now at 55%.

The tourism sector has seen a notable improvement since the lifting of travel bans in EU countries and other restrictions, particularly during the peak season last year.

Eurostat previously reported that 43% of the tourism nights in EU countries in 2021 was recorded primarily in July and august.

It was also reported that October saw the highest number nights spent in 15 European Union areas, which includes famous European countries like Paris, Rome, and Berlin.

According to Eurostat's figures, a significant number of tourists were also received by EU countries in July and August, which further contributes to the recovery of the sector that has been severely affected by COVID-related restrictions.
