Five Zamfara residents killed in armed attack
The killings were carried out in revenge, as locals were thought to share information about the bandits with the security officers in the area.
The victims were from Rogoji, located 2 kilometers away from the city of Bakura. Sources say that the residents were killed just before morning prayers.
“The bandits arrived on motorcycles around 5 am and started shooting, which alerted the vigilantes in our town. If it wasn’t for them, the bandits wanted to loot the entire community. They killed five men.
“The problem is that some of our people have clues to the security agents about the whereabouts of the bandits in the forest and the guards who led the operation were from our town. That is why we are praying for the end of the informants because it was some informants in our town who told the bandits that we were in collusion with the police to track them down.
“I personally feel like they will still come back because that was their promise. They are angry at us and what we are doing to confront them,” Rogoji resident and witness, Bello Mande, declared for Premium Times.
The victims were buried on the same day. Despite the situation turning back to normal, residents are fleeing the area due to fear of new incidents.
The armed men are believed to be from the Lambar Bakura. So far, Police representatives have not issued an official statement on the matter.
Crime rates have been rampant in Zamfara, considered to be a dangerous state in Nigeria, as thousand of people were murdered or kidnapped in the past year. Violence is expected to extend to Niger.
