France extends the state of emergency for more six months

News

The French National Assembly approved Tuesday night a six-month extension of the state of emergency in France, six days after the attack that made 84 dead in Nice and in the context of a political climate poisoned by allegations of laxity in fighting terrorism made by the opposition, AFP reported.

As required by a part of the right-wing parties, the article to extend the state of emergency for six months, until the end of January 2017, was adopted by a raised hand vote of the MPs. The text was redirected to the Senate where it was debated on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Manuel Valls said France must expect more deadly attacks despite precautions taken by his government. Speaking at the debate in the National Assembly, he said France would have to learn to live with the threat. "Even if these words are hard to say, it's my duty to do so," he said.

Qualified as "fatalistic" by its critics, the Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls warned that France could expect "other attacks" and "other innocent people killed" in a speech Tuesday evening before MPs. "There will be other attacks and there will be other innocent people killed. We must not become accustomed, we must never become accustomed, to the horror, but we must learn to live with this menace."

This security regime that facilitates the strong searches has been practiced since the jihadi attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris. It is for the first time since the war in Algeria (1954-1962) when this exceptional regime prevailed almost eight months, when a state of emergency lasts that long in France, says France Presse.
