French Nationality Taken Away by France from Two Dual Nationals
After it was discovered that they had been planning attacks, the French government has deported two dual French nationals.
SchengenVisaInfo.com reports that one of the people who lost their French citizenship was a Franco–Moroccan (Unzile Nur Sert) and the other is a Franco–Turkish.
The same showed that the Franco-Turkish citizen was also sentenced for similar reasons in 2017.
According to French authorities, the Franco-Turkish citizen, who has now been stripped of French citizenship, was involved in an attack on Paris in March 2016. The attack targeted a shopping center, two cafes and a concert hall.
C News reports that Sert's lawyers commented on the decision by the government to remove the Franco-Turkish citizen from French citizenship. They stated that their client had already served her sentence, and is now fully integrated into French society.
Sert's lawyers stated that they would appeal the decree. They also stressed that they don't believe such a decision to be right.
"Our client paid her debt to society by serving her sentence several years ago and is now fully reintegrated. This forfeiture has no other purpose than that of the political display," the lawyers' statement mentioned.
C News reported that Karim Kanali, the Franco-Moroccan national, was sentenced in 2019 to seven years imprisonment for his participation in an attack plan in Orleans in 2015.
According to analysis by the Centre for Terrorism, Kanali was part a plan that included other targets, including police officers.
It is not the first time the French authorities have taken the decision to deport someone for participating in attacks or posing a threat to the public security.
According to data provided by France's Ministry of Interior, 19 people have lost their French nationality in total since 2019.
According to France's current laws, French nationals can only be stripped of their French citizenship if they have both French and French nationality. French nationality is not available to those who have it.
After evaluating all actions taken, the authorities make the decision to deport someone without French citizenship. After the authorities have established that the individual is a threat to public security, a decree can be prepared and approved by the State Council.
