Iceland Unveils Enhanced Arrivals Hall for Non-Schengen Passengers
Iceland has announced that a new arrivals border will be opened for passengers arriving from territories outside of the Schengen Zone.
SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that according to a report by the Isavia the new border hall would ease and improve the handling for passengers arriving on the territory in accordance with the new European regulations.
Iceland's authorities have said that the new border hall will improve the flow of travellers in the terminal. This follows the efforts made to reduce the long queues for border control and shorten the waiting time with improved efficiency and self-service machines.
The temporary building for the EU Schengen border external will be used while a permanent facility can be built in the new building of connection that is currently being designed.
According to Isavia, the building was designed so that it can be dismantled and used in other ways when its border control role ends.
Local media confirmed that the building has one floor and is located at the east end of South Budling.
It was previously stated that a building would be built in the center of Keflavik Airport to connect the North and South buildings. It was also stressed that it would be used by all travelers.
Iceland authorities said that this building is part of a second major phase of airport development.
The building will not only connect the original terminal to the South Building but will also improve the services provided for passengers who have connections via Keflavik Airport. This new building, along with the East Wing currently being constructed, will increase the terminal's size by 70 percent.
Iceland authorities had announced that a new baggage hall would be in operation by the end this year. It is a part the East Wing, which is under construction at Keflavik Airport.
"The bag reception belts will be tripled in size and performance, and the waiting area doubles in size for arriving passengers to the country. So, this will be a complete revolution for passengers," Gudmundur Dadi Runarsson mentioned.
He stated that the eastern wig will be opened in phases, beginning with a new luggage reception next year. Then in small steps until the end next year.
