India Owns the Biggest Community Kitchen in the World
In a luxurious place in Amritsar, India, no poor man have ever paid even one rupee for the meal. The Golden Temple, a Sikh temple is the place where everyone is welcomed to enjoy the food and the beautiful environment of marble and gold.
The Golden Temple, where volunteers from all religions gather to serve 100,000 meals daily to those in need, involves a huge kitchen that has never been closed. The community kitchen of the temple is considered the largest free kitchen in the world and offers weekly tons of food for those in need.
Everything is organized and supported by volunteers who belong to different religions around the world and perfectly illustrates the idea of equality. It's become more than a place where you can eat a hot meal; it is a space where people exchange ideas, stories and regain confidence and energy. All food comes from donations of more than 12,000 kilograms of flour, 1,500 kilograms of rice to the 2,000 kilos of vegetables per month. Most donors are anonymous as the Indian fundamental values are to glorify the name of God, to sing hymns and work voluntarily.
It's not just a temple where poor people can eat; this temple is in fact a sanctuary where all men are really considered equal in a society influenced deeply by the system of classes, castes and hierarchies.
