Indonesia – a popular medical destination for Chinese tourists
According to Ctrip, more than 500.000 Chinese citizens aimed at improving their health during 2016, with overseas trips targeting Indonesia.
Despite Thailand being the main medical destination for Chinese travelers so far, Indonesia has registered a tourism volume growth of 30% this year, as Bali became a medical hot spot visited by more than 150.000 tourists. And the figures issued by Euromonitor come in spite of Mount Agung‘s imminent eruption the global media talked about for weeks.
Chinese people in search of wellness retreats focused on oriental medicine including Ayurvedic therapy, acupuncture, Balinese remedies, chi gong, herbal treatments and so on, come to Bali in search of the perfect health-boosting experience, while enjoying the area’s renowned exoticism and the premium services offered by the local spas.
Moreover, according to Ctrip’s data, the average health and wellness tourism spending exceeds the regular outbound trips by ten times.
Statistics shows that the medical market Indonesia is popular for are the following health-care related services: general health screenings, cancer screenings, genetic-testing, cosmetic surgery, placenta anti-aging, living cell therapy, hepatitis C treatments and physical therapy.
With the latest wave of tourists choosing the country for both medical and wellness holidays, experts forecast Indonesia to be the next medical hot spot, as local authorities aim to attract 10 million Chinese tourists by 2019, while currently developing three more tourism-focused economic zones including luxuriant resorts, entertainment facilities and a considerable increase in the number of flight connections between the country’s medical destinations and travelers from China.
