London Luton Airport Enhances Passenger Experience with Next-Gen Scanners

Airlines & Airports

London Luton Airport (LLA) has taken a major step forward in improving passenger convenience by introducing next-generation body scanners and CT scanner technology in all security lanes. The upgrades, implemented in July 2024, are designed to streamline the security process, allowing travelers to pass through more quickly and with less hassle.

A New Era of Simplified Airport Security

Research commissioned by LLA highlights how these technological advancements have reduced common travel inconveniences. Previously, more than three-quarters (77%) of passengers reported having to remove their shoes during security checks, and about a third (37%) adjusted their outfits to accommodate security procedures. With the new scanners, footwear removal is no longer required, granting travelers more freedom in their airport attire choices.

The new technology also allows passengers to keep liquids and electronic devices in their bags during the security screening. However, current government restrictions still limit liquid containers to 100ml or less.

Streamlined Security for a Better Passenger Experience

The introduction of state-of-the-art scanners has led to quicker processing times and a more relaxed travel experience. According to the research, nearly half (46%) of flyers expressed excitement about the simplified travel process. The airport’s upgrades come just in time for a busy travel season, ensuring passengers can enjoy a smoother, more efficient journey.

Neil Thompson, Chief Operations Officer at LLA, stated, "We are proud to be one of the first major UK airports to offer next-generation security to our passengers. This investment is a significant step in enhancing our operations, ensuring a simpler, friendlier experience for all our guests."

Fashion Freedom at the Airport

The research also reveals a shift in passenger priorities regarding airport attire. With the hassle of shoe removal eliminated, travelers are free to wear a wider range of footwear styles. This development is particularly significant for younger travelers, with 43% of Gen Z and 44% of younger millennials considering footwear first when planning their travel outfits.

Prebook Security Service: Skip the Queues

In addition to the technology upgrades, LLA has launched a new Prebook Security service, allowing passengers to reserve a 10-minute security slot up to four days before their flight. The free service aims to further reduce wait times and enhance the overall passenger experience.
