Lufthansa Turns Munich Layovers Into City Breaks

Airlines & Airports

Lufthansa is giving long-haul passengers a reason to linger in Munich, launching a new stopover program that lets travellers on Singapore and US routes turn their connection into a proper city break of up to seven days.

The program is built directly into the booking flow on lufthansa.com and is available across all travel classes. When booking, passengers can add a Munich stopover on either the outbound or return leg of their journey, choosing a stay anywhere between 24 hours and seven days. A surcharge may apply depending on the route combination selected.

The experience doesn't stop at the flight either. Twenty-four hours after completing the flight booking, travellers can add hotel accommodation, rental cars, and leisure activities in Munich through integrated partners — all within the same platform.

For Lufthansa, the program is a way to turn what would otherwise be dead time into genuine value. Munich Hub Manager and Lufthansa Airlines board member Heiko Reitz framed it as an opportunity to let passengers experience one of Europe's most attractive cities on their own terms, making the journey itself part of the travel experience.

Munich is the launch hub for the program, with Singapore and US routes the first to offer the option. Lufthansa plans to expand the program gradually over the next year, adding more regions and destinations — and eventually extending the stopover concept to other hubs within the wider Lufthansa Group network.
