France's decision to prohibit the abaya arrives following extensive deliberations.

This move emerges against the backdrop of discussions surrounding the presence of abayas in French educational institutions, a context where the use of headscarves by women has historically been forbidden.

As the new academic term approaches, France's education minister has announced the impending ban, which is aligned with the country's longstanding practice of prohibiting religious symbols within public education. Rooted in 19th-century laws that eradicated traditional Catholic influences from the educational system, this approach has encountered challenges when it comes to accommodating the evolving demographics, including a burgeoning Muslim minority.

French public schools have previously barred the display of prominent crosses, Jewish kippas, and Islamic headscarves. In 2004, a prohibition was enacted against headscarves in schools, and a subsequent ban on full-face veils in public spaces was established in 2010, generating discord within the nation's five-million-strong Muslim community.

Education Minister Gabriel Attal conveyed his decision regarding the abaya during an interview with TV channel TF1, emphasizing the aim to foster an environment where students' religious affiliations are not immediately discernible. He asserted, “When you walk into a classroom, you shouldn’t be able to identify the pupils’ religion just by looking at them.”

This development emerges after prolonged discourse regarding the presence of abayas within French schools, a context in which women have long been prohibited from wearing the hijab.

Various political factions have engaged in this debate, with the right and far right advocating for the prohibition. Conversely, the left has argued that such a measure could potentially infringe upon civil liberties.

Unlike headscarves, abayas previously occupied a nuanced space without an outright ban.

The French Council of Muslim Faith (CFCM), a national entity encompassing multiple Muslim associations, has posited that articles of clothing alone should not be deemed unequivocally "a religious sign."

The principle of secularism, a cornerstone of French society, unites a broad political spectrum – from left-wing proponents championing Enlightenment ideals to far-right constituents seeking to preserve a particular French identity amidst concerns over the expanding role of Islam in the nation's cultural landscape.
