New EU Liquid Regulations to Impact Helsinki Airport Security from September 2024

Airlines & Airports

Revised Liquid Limits for Hand Luggage

Beginning September 1, 2024, new EU regulations will change the liquid limits for passengers travelling through Helsinki Airport. Passengers will be restricted to carrying liquids in containers no larger than 100 millilitres within their hand luggage. Despite this, the total amount of liquids allowed per passenger remains two litres.

“To ensure a smooth security control process, passengers must adhere to the new guidelines by packing their liquids in containers no larger than 100ml in their hand luggage,” stated Ari Kumara, Director of Security Operations at Finavia.

Security Screening and Exemptions

The new regulation mandates that liquid containers must be kept inside hand luggage during security screening. Exemptions to this rule include:

  • Medical Purposes: Liquids needed for medical reasons.
  • Baby Food: Necessary liquids for infant care.
  • Special Dietary Requirements: Specific dietary needs that require liquid forms.

The regulation change will not impact the current rules regarding electronics, sharp objects, or checked-in luggage. Additionally, passengers passing through security control for transfers at Helsinki Airport or travelling through Finavia's regional airports will continue to follow the existing 100 ml liquid rule.

Preparing for Smooth Security Checks

Ari Kumara emphasizes the importance of preparation to avoid delays and ensure efficient security checks.

“It is also important for passengers to be aware that different security controls may be encountered at various stages of their journey and in different countries. Therefore, it is advisable to familiarise yourself with airport-specific instructions and prepare for varying procedures in advance,” Kumara added.

Communication and Passenger Information

Finavia will ensure passengers are well-informed about the updated liquid regulations and packing instructions via multiple channels:

  • Website Updates: Detailed information will be available on the Finavia website.
  • Airport Signage: Clear instructions will be displayed at Helsinki Airport.
  • Airline Notifications: Passengers will receive information about the new regulations from their airlines.

By adhering to these new guidelines, passengers can help facilitate a smoother security process at Helsinki Airport and ensure compliance with the latest EU regulations.
