New Underground Connection to Link Metro and Rodalies Renfe Stations at Barcelona's T2

Airlines & Airports

A new underground connection will soon improve the accessibility between the Metro and Rodalies Renfe train stations at Terminal 2 (T2) of Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. This development follows an announcement made by Adif, the public infrastructure company, which will oversee the adaptation of the L9 Metro station at T2. The construction plans were approved by the government on September 10.

Long-Awaited Connection to Boost Convenience

The project will create a direct underground passage between the L9 Metro station ("Aeroport T2") and the Rodalies Renfe train station at T2, which are currently disconnected, requiring passengers to navigate a less convenient route between the two. This new link will greatly enhance the overall passenger experience, providing seamless transfers between the city's metro and train services.

Infrastructure Improvements

The plan includes significant upgrades to the infrastructure:

  • New escalators will be installed to connect the different levels between the platforms and the passenger concourse.
  • A new underground gallery will allow travelers to easily access the metro from the Rodalies Renfe station, and vice versa.
  • The passenger concourse will be renovated, including the creation of new platform sections and the installation of safety doors.
  • Modern ticket machines and access control systems will be installed to streamline entry and exit points.

In addition, a new control room for station management will be established, alongside new flooring, ceiling installations, and updated signage to assist passengers.

Part of a Larger Development Plan

This underground connection is part of a larger effort to improve the airport’s accessibility, enhancing the transportation network that serves the growing number of passengers passing through Barcelona-El Prat. The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically contributing to Goal 9 (building sustainable infrastructure) and Goal 11 (providing accessible and safe transport systems).

Once completed, the link will offer passengers a smoother, more efficient transit experience, seamlessly connecting the L9 Metro and Rodalies Renfe services for easier access to Barcelona and surrounding areas.
