Norway Introduces the World’s Most Stunning Public Loo

Located on the tip of a fjord, on Norway’s western coast, Ureddplassen, the “wave-shaped toilet” offers a landscape to remember as it confronts the wide, open Norwegian Sea.

The view is framed by the snow-capped mountains of the Lofoten Wall.

“Ureddplassen is a place for a short break, a nice rest and a picnic, or for long nights with midnight sun or northern lights,” said Nasjonale turistveger, tourist board for Norwegian Scenic Route Helgelandskysten, where the toilet can be found.

The lavatory is close to the town of Gildeskal and is part of the Helgelandskysten scenic route. It went through a £1.4million renovation last year that provided it the installation of a new frosted-glass, as well as concrete bathroom building designed by Oslo-based architects: Marit Justine Haugen and Dan Zohar.

Just outside the toilet, there are block benches made of Norwegian Rose marble, which is the same kind of stone that was used for the construction of New York’s United Nations building. The benches provide seating for everyone passing by. There have also been constructed steps towards the shore.

“The view from the steps is unique and there is ample seating well protected from traffic noise,” said Steinar Skaar, route manager

Even if it may sound odd at first, the stop-off is not just a toilet, but also a memorial paying tribute to the 42 men who lost their lives in February 1943, when the Royal Norwegian Navy submarine, the HnoMS Uredd (which translated to fearless), hit a mine laid by the German ship Cobra, and sank.
