Portuguese Airports Saw 3.9 million Passengers in January Alone

Statistics Portugal, the official statistical office in Portugal, revealed that there were 3.9 million passengers registered at Portuguese national airports during January.

This is an 84% increase over last year.

Similar data shows that passengers moved by 5.7% more in January 2023 than January 2020, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Statistics Portugal reports that 60.7 million passengers disembarked daily at Portugal's airports during the first month. This is a significant increase over the January 2017 figure (31,900 passengers, +89.9%) and 5.4% over January 2020 (5,600 passengers).

According to the same source, 16700 tons of mail and goods were handled in January at Portuguese national airports. This represents a decrease by 0.4% compared with January 2022. The postal goods movement saw a decrease in volume of 3.2% compared to January 2020.

According to Portuguese Statistics, France was the country of origin and destination for most flights. Spain and the United Kingdom followed, with the highest growth rates compared to January 2022.

The positive rise in passengers at Portuguese airports was also evident in the first half 2022. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the total number of passengers received by Portuguese airports during the period was, which is 344 percent more than the numbers for the same period last years.

Further INE data also showed that the number traveller in the first half 2022 was still lower than pre-pandemic levels with a total 12.8 percent.

The total number of passengers handled by Lisbon airport was also 12.1 million, or 49.8% of the total. This is an increase of 380.9% compared with the same period 2021. However, the figures were still lower than the same period 2021.
According to INE in the first half 2022, Porto airport handled a total 5.52 million passengers. This is an increase of 335.0 percent. Faro, however, saw the largest increase with 503.2 to 3.46 million passengers.

INE statistics recently revealed that Portugal's national tourist accommodation establishments received a total 1.5 million passengers and 3.5 millions overnight stays in January 2023. This data shows that there was a 74.5 percent increase in overnight stays during this time period compared to 2022.
