Aviation sector in Malaysia will take up to one year to fully recover

News

As the aviation sector worldwide is struggling with staff shortages due to the recent pandemic, as well as significant flight disruptions because of lack of trained employees, the group chief executive officer of Malaysia Airlines thinks that the situation in his country will take between six months and one year to return to normal operative levels.

He added that the circumstances are common also for the country’s neighbours, as well as for Europe.

“People are not attracted to come back to an airline environment, because first of all, airlines are very volatile.

“We retrenched people during the pandemic and [when] we try to call them back, they think twice,” Izham commented.

In order to solve the current crisis, airlines and airports need to collaborate and find new ways to fill up the vacancies, as experienced workers are extremely difficult to find.

“Resources are our main issue. Airlines cannot [restore] the capacity back as quickly as they want to,” Izham added.

According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong, air passenger traffic in Malaysia this year is expected to increase by 30 to 45 per cent when compared to pre-pandemic levels.
