Cathay Pacific Backs Government's Plans to Elevate Hong Kong's Aviation Hub Status

Airlines & Airports

Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flagship airline, has expressed strong support for the initiatives outlined in the Hong Kong SAR Government’s 2024 Policy Address aimed at reinforcing the city's position as a leading international aviation hub. The government plans to leverage the Three-Runway System at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and expand the Airport City to accommodate growing passenger and cargo demands.

Expanding Hong Kong's Global Aviation Reach

Ronald Lam, Chief Executive Officer of Cathay Group, welcomed the new policies, stating that HKIA is already one of the world’s busiest airports, both in terms of international passengers and cargo. The Three-Runway System, set to accommodate millions more passengers and cargo each year, offers tremendous opportunities for further growth.

Lam also highlighted the government's efforts to expand the Airport City, which will create additional tourism and retail prospects, further cementing Hong Kong’s status as a global aviation leader.

Strengthening Connectivity and Partnerships

Cathay Pacific fully supports the government's proactive measures to enhance Hong Kong's air connectivity with Mainland China, as well as fostering closer ties with countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. The airline also sees great potential in the announcement of deeper cooperation with Middle Eastern and ASEAN countries, which is expected to unlock new tourism and business avenues for Hong Kong.

Lam stated, “We are eagerly looking forward to the new era of our international aviation hub that will take Hong Kong to new heights. By 2025, the Cathay Group aims to connect passengers to 100 destinations worldwide, continuing to expand our global network."

Supporting Mega-Events and Sustainable Development

Cathay also praised the government's plans to further develop Hong Kong's mega-event tourism economy, including initiatives that support the city’s thriving arts and culture scene, particularly through the West Kowloon Cultural District. The airline remains a proud sponsor of major events, including the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, which help elevate Hong Kong’s profile on the global stage.

In addition, Cathay applauds the government's efforts to enhance intermodal connectivity between Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, particularly through its collaboration with Zhuhai Airport. This synergy will benefit the Fly-Via-Zhuhai-Hong Kong passenger service and boost the development of Hong Kong’s international air cargo business.

Commitment to Sustainable Aviation

Cathay Pacific fully supports the government’s initiatives to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which aligns with the growing global demand for eco-friendly fuel options. The airline believes that these steps will accelerate SAF adoption across the industry, contributing to a more sustainable future for aviation.

Talent Attraction and Future Outlook

Cathay also welcomes the government’s plans to attract high-caliber talent through various talent admission schemes, which will support the city's long-term growth in the aviation sector.

Lam concluded, “Cathay is greatly encouraged by the initiatives outlined in the 2024 Policy Address. We remain confident in Hong Kong’s long-term success as an international aviation hub, and we are excited to be part of this bright future.”
