As London experiences mid-20°C temperatures this week, London Stansted Airport is taking proactive measures to prepare for winter by launching its snow training program. This initiative aims to ensure the airport is ready for any adverse weather conditions in the upcoming months.

The airport's dedicated snow team, responsible for clearing runways, taxiways, and aircraft stands during winter storms, has been actively refining its winter operations plan. Over the past few weeks, the team has conducted regular training sessions to familiarize themselves with the airport's specialized equipment and snow-clearing techniques.

In addition to hands-on training, the snow team has revised and updated emergency response plans to enhance their efficiency in handling snow-related incidents. This comprehensive approach ensures the team is fully prepared for any eventualities this winter.

Nick Millar, the airport’s Operations Director, emphasized the significance of winter readiness. “With more than 29 million passengers travelling through London Stansted in all weather conditions each year, it’s crucial to keep the airfield and runway safe and operational,” he said. He noted that winter brings additional challenges, necessitating a robust Winter Operations Plan that is reviewed and tested annually.

A key component of the preparation process is ensuring the airport has the necessary equipment and resources for effective snow and ice management. The snow team has been inspecting and maintaining snowplows, blowers, and other snow removal equipment, ensuring they are in optimal condition. Additionally, they are checking supplies of salt and de-icer to adequately treat runways and taxiways during icy conditions.
