Record-Breaking Day for TSA: Nearly 3 Million Passengers

Airlines & Airports

Over 2.9 million passengers transited through U.S. airports, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

The TSA experienced its busiest day on record this past Sunday, screening almost 3 million travellers across U.S. terminals. This surge contributed to a total of more than 14.6 million passengers passing through the Transportation Security Administration’s checkpoints from November 21 to November 26.

Lisa Farbstein, an agency spokesperson, highlighted a 10.1% increase compared to the same Sunday last year when more than 2.6 million travellers were screened. This unprecedented volume was acknowledged as the highest-ever traffic at security checkpoints in TSA's history.

This remarkable turnout aligns with the TSA's forecast of an exceptionally busy holiday season, often resulting in longer security lines and potential traveller frustration. As the winter holidays continue, the agency urges passengers to follow their advice: arrive early, maintain patience, and check TSA guidelines regarding items allowed through security checkpoints.

Prior to the holiday period, major U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, anticipated record-breaking Thanksgiving travel. American Airlines reported nearly 6.5 million customers flying with them during the holiday, marking the "highest-ever load factor for these dates."

David Seymour, American's chief operating officer, expressed gratitude for the trust customers placed in the airline, emphasizing their commitment to a safe, reliable, and successful operation during the Thanksgiving holiday. The company aims to carry this momentum into the December holidays.
