Tourism in Dominica is in Full Recovery Mode

News

Dominica, a tiny Caribbean Island, is seeing a lot of tourism growth post-outbreak 2022.

It hosted a total of 60 704 overnight, land-based tourists last year, which represents a 75.4 per cent increase on the 14,888 visitors it received in 2021.

Officials from Discover Dominica, the tourism office of the island nation, claim that the country projects "even greater growth in 2023." This is due to positive developments such as a higher post-pandemic demand for travel, Dominica's relaxed COVID protocols, and the launch on the island of its first direct flights from the U.S.

Dominica was a boutique destination that attracted a record number of visitors to its World Creole Music Festival, October 2012. This prompted many travelers to make Dominica their next stop. The island has seen a lot of interest from both returning and new visitors since the pandemic.

"We are thrilled to see the comeback of travel," stated Colin Piper, Discover Dominica's CEO. "We are still working toward recovery as we are not yet back to pre-pandemic numbers, but we are in a good place as we begin 2023 with strong bookings throughout the winter travel season."

The pre-arrival testing of vaccinated and non-vaccinated travelers who arrive in Dominica has been discontinued. Also, arrival testing has been eliminated for symptomatic travellers.

Officials from Discover Dominica celebrated the first anniversary American Airlines' nonstop service from Miami International Airport to Dominica in December. This was the first direct flight to Dominica from the U.S.

American Airlines contributed 33 percent to all island traveler capacity as of November. Officials from Discover Dominica stated that service will continue through 2023, "with changes to the schedule and frequency."

"The addition of the American Airlines flight had a significant impact on our tourism arrivals," Piper also mentioned. "It's never been faster or easier for U.S. visitors to travel to and from Dominica. It's also a valuable addition for the diaspora community."
