Turkey attacks Kurdish and Syrian targets
Syria condemns Turkish military intervention and urges UN Security Council to take action on the attacks
The Turkish military attack on Syrian territory was seen as a violation of Syrian sovereignty. Syria claims it has the right to respond the attack, as 100 Turkish soldiers are believed to have crossed the land Syrian border.
Official letters of Syrian government to the UN Secretary General and the Security Council's Chairman stated: "Turkish artillery shelling of Syrian territory constitutes direct support to the armed terrorist organisations. Syria will maintain its legitimate right to respond to the Turkish crimes and attacks and to claim compensation for the damage caused."
France's foreign ministry also called for Turkey to end its terrestrial assault in northern Syria, as Ankara hit Kurdish and Syrian ground targets on Saturday and Sunday. The Turkish intervention also raised concerns at Washington. The attack comes just days after US and Russia reached agreement to cease hostilities on Syrian territory.
More than 250.000 people died in Syria and 11 million have fled their homes since the beginning of the civil war five years ago.
