Renovation of Schiphol’s Bus Station Begins, Completion Expected by 2027

The bus station at Schiphol Airport is undergoing a comprehensive renovation, with construction starting this week. The project, set to be completed by 2027, will transform the station into a more efficient hub with enhanced connectivity between buses and trains, while travelers will continue to have access to bus services throughout the renovation period.

Temporary Bus Stops During Renovation

For the time being, Schiphol’s temporary bus stops will come into operation by spring 2025. These new locations will allow bus services to run uninterrupted during the renovation process, with clear signage guiding passengers to the correct stops.

Schiphol will also install shielded walkways to ensure that travelers can move safely between the bus and train stations, even as the renovation progresses. The construction area will be fenced off to minimize disruption, and the surrounding area will be reconfigured.

Improvements for Cars and Bicycles

As part of the renovation work, the P1/P6 car park exit will be relocated, with motorists being diverted using temporary signage. In addition, a new temporary bicycle shed has been established at Mercuriusplein to accommodate travelers and employees arriving by bike.

Work Phased Over Time

The renovation will take place in phases, with the initial work focusing on temporary bicycle sheds and rerouting cables and pipes. Several transport functions, such as app-ordered taxis and crew transport, have been moved to Koepelstraat arrival passage to make room for the new bus station.

The New Bus Station: What to Expect

Once completed, the new bus station will feature a large, covered island platform with 20 bus stops, accommodating more buses and offering travelers more space while waiting. The station will also make it easier to transfer between buses and trains with the addition of three new stairways connecting directly to train platforms below. Gates around the stairs will allow for seamless check-in and check-out procedures.

A new bicycle shed will be built with space for 500 bicycles, making it more convenient for travelers and airport staff to park their bikes. The surrounding roads will be redesigned and integrated with the new bus station to improve overall traffic flow.

A Collaborative Effort

This renovation is a joint project between Schiphol and the Amsterdam Regional Transport Authority (Vervoerregio Amsterdam). The goal is to improve the airport’s public transport infrastructure, making it easier for passengers to move between bus and train services, while also providing better facilities for both commuters and travelers alike.
