Schiphol Airport Station Upgrades with New Stairs, Escalators, and Lifts

Airlines & Airports

Schiphol Airport station has undergone significant renovations with the adaptation of many stairs and escalators and the renovation of lifts. These improvements aim to create more free space on the platforms, facilitating quicker boarding and disembarking of trains and improving overall traffic flow.

Key Upgrades and Changes

Stairs, Escalators, and Lifts Renovation

Over the past two years, existing ascent and descent points, including stairs, moving walkways, and lifts, have been upgraded. Key changes include:

  • Replacement of Ramps: Fixed stairs have replaced ramps, providing a more stable ascent and descent.
  • Widened Stairs: Both existing and new stairs have been widened to accommodate more passengers.
  • Double Escalators: Single escalators have been converted into double escalators to handle increased passenger volume.
  • Lift Upgrades: Lifts have been fitted with new glazing, fire doors, and wall coating for enhanced fire resistance between the platform and Schiphol Plaza.

Construction Details

The work, executed by BAM Infra, primarily took place during train-free periods to minimize inconvenience. Despite ongoing construction, the station remained accessible to travelers and staff. Significant demolition work included the removal of six moving walkways, each 45 meters long, which were dismantled and transported using 280-meter-long work trains running on sustainable HVO100 fuel.

Celebrating Completion

Moment of Celebration

With most renovations completed, a celebration is planned at the station. Representatives from all cooperating parties will distribute treats to travelers, marking this milestone and appreciating the patience and cooperation of station users.

Future-Proofing Schiphol Airport

Multimodal Hub Schiphol Project

The renovations are part of the broader Multimodal Hub Schiphol (MKS) project, aiming to maintain Schiphol as a comfortable and efficient transport hub. Key goals include:

  • Capacity and Safety: Ensuring the station can handle future passenger volumes safely and efficiently.
  • Quality Improvements: Enhancing the overall quality of Schiphol Plaza, platforms, and the bus station.
  • Direct Access Points: Future plans include creating new access points directly connecting the train station to the bus station above, allowing seamless movement for travelers between platforms and buses.
