SWISS Pioneers with Climeworks in a Quest for Sustainable Aviation

SWISS and the Lufthansa Group have marked a milestone in the aviation industry's journey towards sustainability by initiating a long-term strategic partnership with Climeworks, a Swiss company at the forefront of carbon dioxide (CO2) removal technology. This alliance represents a major step towards the aviation sector's goal of net-zero emissions, highlighting the adoption of Climeworks’s groundbreaking Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.

As the first airlines to collaborate with Climeworks, SWISS and the Lufthansa Group are underlining their commitment to sustainability and Swiss technological innovation. The agreement, spanning until 2030 with options for additional carbon removal, signifies a key stride towards their ambitious environmental goals.

Dieter Vranckx, CEO of SWISS, expressed pride in leading the airline industry towards a sustainable future by scaling up crucial technologies alongside Climeworks. This partnership not only demonstrates a commitment to reducing CO2 emissions but also supports Swiss innovation, reinforcing sustainability as a core aspect of their corporate strategy.

Jan Huckfeldt, Climeworks’s CCO, welcomed the partnership with SWISS and the Lufthansa Group, recognizing it as a pivotal moment for the aviation industry’s engagement with long-term CO2 elimination solutions. This collaboration is set to amplify the role of DAC technology in achieving net-zero emissions in air travel.

Climeworks stands as a global pioneer in DAC technology, operating the largest DAC and carbon storage facility in Iceland. The technology is essential for the aviation industry to meet its carbon emission reduction targets, offering a scalable solution for atmospheric CO2 capture and storage, as well as for producing sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

SWISS and the Lufthansa Group are not new to leading sustainable initiatives within the aviation sector, particularly in the development and use of SAF. They continue to offer customers various options to enhance the sustainability of their air travel, including purchasing SAF and supporting climate protection projects. Soon, customers will also have the opportunity to contribute to the expansion of Climeworks’s DAC technology, furthering the industry's journey towards a more sustainable future.
