Technical University of Munich Establishes Presence at LabCampus

Airlines & Airports

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is set to become a new tenant of LabCampus GmbH, Munich Airport’s innovation campus. The esteemed university will occupy approximately 20,400 m² within the innovation hub, establishing a “Convergence Center” to foster collaboration among students, scientific talents, entrepreneurial teams, business partners, and citizens on groundbreaking projects.

A Unique Ecosystem for Innovation

The TUM Convergence Center aims to create a unique ecosystem where interdisciplinary collaboration can thrive. Key research areas for the center will include aviation, mobility, robotics, and security. Additionally, the university will establish the TUM Sustainable and Future Aviation Center, focusing on developing sustainable and efficient aviation solutions in partnership with Lufthansa and Munich Airport. A letter of intent to formalize this collaboration was signed today by the three partners.

Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, stated, “With the expansion of LabCampus to a university location and the partnership between Munich Airport, TUM, and Lufthansa, we bring together three institutions that will not only contribute to the future of the location and the region but also make a valuable contribution to the sustainability of aviation.”

Creating a Dynamic Environment for Young Talent

TUM will find an ideal environment at LabCampus. Starting at the end of 2025, TUM’s emerging scientific talents will engage with the innovation ecosystem fostered by the LabCampus community. Nathalie Leroy, CFO of Munich Airport, expressed enthusiasm for TUM’s involvement: “We are pleased that the Technical University of Munich is bringing such a great initiative to Munich Airport and LabCampus. TUM is an important building block for LabCampus and offers potential for the further development of the concept and the area. LabCampus is so much more than just an office location; it is a place where people meet and exchange ideas. Munich Airport sees itself as a connecting element for global science with the Free State of Bavaria and the research location Munich.”

Nearing Full Capacity

With TUM’s move, the buildings LAB 48 and LAB 52 at LabCampus are almost fully leased, with only 5,000 square meters remaining available for potential companies. Future plans include the development of serviced apartments west of LAB 48 and LAB 52.

LabCampus offers international companies, hidden champions, scale-ups, and young talents optimal conditions for collaborative work and cross-sector exchanges at the Munich Airport Campus. The German Air Traffic Control (DFS), the AirportAcademy, and amplimind are already operational in the first two buildings, LAB 48 and LAB 52. Exotec is scheduled to move into LAB 48 in fall 2024, followed by Lufthansa Aviation Training GmbH (LAT) in early 2025.
