TfL Opens Consultation for Proposed DLR Extension

Car Rental & Rail

TfL consults on extending the DLR to Thamesmead, proposing new stations, homes, and a rail tunnel, aiming to enhance London connectivity and support growth.

Transport for London (TfL) has initiated a public consultation on the proposal to extend the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) service from Gallions Reach to Thamesmead via Beckton Riverside. This consultation period, running from February 5, 2024, to March 18, 2024, invites public input on the proposed extension, which aims to enhance connectivity between two significant growth areas in the city.

The proposed extension includes ambitious plans for the construction of two new stations at Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead, the development of up to 30,000 new homes, and the addition of a new rail tunnel under the River Thames to facilitate this expansion. Alex Williams, TfL's Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, emphasized the importance of the extension in boosting connectivity and the role of public feedback in shaping the project's future planning stages.

The extension is projected to generate up to 10,000 jobs, contributing to the city's employment and following in the footsteps of previous DLR expansions, such as the one toward Woolwich Arsenal. This project not only aims to enhance transport links but also to stimulate significant housing developments in areas like Woolwich, Canning Town, and the Royal Docks.

In 2023, TfL and its partners submitted a Strategic Outline Case (SOC) to the government, highlighting the potential benefits and transformative impact of the DLR extension on the local area. Funding commitments for the project have been secured from a mix of private and public sector partners.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, expressed enthusiasm for the consultation and the DLR extension, highlighting its potential to support the creation of over a hundred thousand affordable homes, improve transport connections, stimulate economic growth, and facilitate the creation of thousands of jobs. This infrastructure project is key to accommodating the capital's expanding population and fostering a more prosperous London for all.

Additionally, TfL plans to enhance the DLR's capacity and service by introducing 54 new trains between 2024 and 2026. This fleet update includes replacing 33 of the oldest trains and adding 19 new vehicles to meet growing demand across the network, further demonstrating TfL's commitment to improving and expanding London's public transportation infrastructure.
