Thailand Reinstates Its Covid-19 Ban On Foreign Tourists

News

All non-Thai entrants over the age of 18 will be required to present evidence of complete vaccination or a medical certificate indicating recovery.

After more than 150 nations across the globe lifted all travel restrictions linked to Covid in 2022, Thailand's move to take a step back and indicate they aim to reinstall limitations is worrisome.

In October 2022, Thailand reopened to regular travel along with many other countries by lifting all restrictions linked to Covid. However, the Bangkok Post reports that limitations may be reinstated.

Anutin Charnvirakul, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health of Thailand, has announced that, starting later this week, all foreign visitors to the country would be required to provide proof of vaccination before being allowed entry.

It takes two doses of the typical vaccination, or only one injection of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, to be considered fully immunised. There is no need for booster injections.

In addition, if you are continuing your trip to a nation that needs a negative Covid test result for entrance, you will need to provide evidence of medical insurance covering coronavirus.

After several nations that had previously been accessible to all tourists with no limitations began re-imposing limits exclusively for Chinese travellers, Thailand takes a step forward. The United Kingdom, Australia, France, Italy, Japan, and many others reinstated travel restrictions for Chinese nationals shortly after China lifted its harsh Covid-zero rules in early January. However, the country aims at imposing limitations not only on Chinese visitors but on all tourists.

“The principle is there will not be any discrimination against a particular country because Covid-19 is spreading in all countries and the strains are similar,” Charnvirakul commented.

As a consequence, soon it may be mandatory for all foreign nationals planning to enter Thailand to provide documentation of having had all recommended vaccinations.

Travelers continuing their journeys from Thailand to countries like China that want a negative Covid test must also provide confirmation of insurance coverage that compensation scheme for the Covid virus. Charnvirakul claims that this assures that visitors to Thailand who obtain a positive test result will have access to medical treatment throughout their mandatory quarantine.

The Minister of Public Health has insisted that this regulation is not aimed towards Chinese visitors.

As of October 1, 2022, Thailand no longer required any special documentation from tourists in order to enter the country. Since March 2020, the country has had a number of severe entry criteria, the most current of which being confirmation of vaccination or a negative Covid test.

In June of 2022, Thai authorities enforced a stringent mask rule for almost two years. Even though there are now more rules to follow in order to enter, it does not seem that the mask requirement will be reinstated.
