The war in Ukraine – latest updates

News

After the recent attack in Kharkiv – the second-largest city in the country - was also directed towards civilians, killing at least 11 residents, many Ukrainians are fleeing the country out of fear of imminent destructions and atrocities the war could bring over their lives.
So far, authorities estimate that half a million refugees have already left Ukraine’s territory.

At the same time, Russia’s financial system is collapsing, with the country’s central bank imposing desperate measures to save capital and stock exchange operations also halted. The result will be an economic isolation for Russia, which is considered to be a consequence of the multiple sanctions imposed by both US and other Western states.

Meanwhile:

The UN General Assembly meets in first emergency session in decades to discuss the escalating situation in the area.

Negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow had no positive outcome in terms of stopping the war.

The EU decided to finance military equipment deliveries to Ukraine.

Civilian death toll in Ukraine is on the raise. Children are also killed in the shelling.

The US is considering barring all Russian flights over its territory, with a final decision yet to be announced.

EU imposed 25 more sanctions on Russian oligarchs, officials and one on an energy insurance company. The list includes “oligarchs and businessmen active in the oil, banking and finance sectors,” senior officials, top military staff and “propagandists who contributed to spread anti-Ukrainian propaganda and promote a positive attitude towards the invasion of Ukraine.”

And The International Criminal Court has announced the opening of an investigation for potential war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

"Given the expansion of the conflict in recent days, it is my intention that this investigation will also encompass any new alleged crimes falling within the jurisdiction of my Office that are committed by any party to the conflict on any part of the territory of Ukraine," prosecutor Karim Khan announced in recent official statement.

More updates to follow.
