United signs Neste SAF agreement
The recent deal is the largest Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) agreement closed with a passenger airline.
United is set to become the first U.S. air carrier to sign an agreement for purchasing 52.5 million gallons of SAF. With this move, the company aims to continue its sustainability efforts, while aiming for a 100% green commitment in the future.
The contract will be valid during the next three years.
"Reducing carbon emissions from fuel is the fastest way United will reach our 100% green goal by 2050. As the airline that has invested more than any other airline in sustainable aviation fuel production, it makes sense to expand our network of partners internationally with a leading company like Neste.
“The demand from our customers to limit their emissions from flying is growing exponentially, and this agreement means that United customers flying from Amsterdam, and potentially more airports, will be partners in our sustainability efforts”, commented Lauren Riley, United's Chief Sustainability Officer.
The agreement is also part of Neste's growth strategy, as the company aims to increase capacity and produce 515 million gallons of SAF on a yearly basis by the end of 2023. Neste has been delivering SAF to customers from European, Asian and American markets since 2011.
Lauren Riley, United's Chief Sustainability Officer, added:
"We're excited to be partnering with United in this milestone purchase agreement and make our SAF available to United, also an industry leader in SAF investments.
“Our global, fast-growing SAF production and supply chain supports airlines and their customers in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Neste is committed to helping aviation transition to a more sustainable future, and we look forward to expanding our cooperation with United."
SAF is produced from 100% renewable residue waste and materials and promotes a considerably smaller carbon footprint, with up to 80 per cent reduced lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions when compared to conventional jet fuel.
As a part of its 100% green commitment goals, United is the airline that invested the most in sustainable aviation fuel on a global level, as well as in other sustainable technologies protecting the environment.
