Venice And Ljubljana To Be Linked By A High-Speed Train

Car Rental & Rail

Better travel between these scenic cities will soon be available.

Italy and Slovenia, despite sharing a border, currently lack a direct train connection, but that could change following a recent test by Italian train operator Trenitalia.

The test route ran from Venice to Ljubljana, reviving discussions from 2021 about connecting Trieste and the Slovenian capital, an idea that never materialized. This successful trial run could reinstate a cross-border service not seen since 2008, potentially launching by April 2024.

The test train journeyed from Venice's Mestre through various stops in Italy, meeting Slovenian Railways' staff at Villa Opicina. From there, it continued to Sesana, about 80 km south-west of Ljubljana, with operational tests conducted on Slovenia's railway network.

FS Italiane, Italy's national railway, expressed optimism about restoring cross-border services, foreseeing a direct train link between Milan and Ljubljana in the future.

Ljubljana, often overlooked by travellers despite its proximity to Italy, boasts a rich history, vibrant art scene, and delicious cuisine. The city's affordability adds to its allure, offering a chance to experience luxury at a lower cost.

Day trips from Ljubljana include the Brda wine region, Terme Dobrna thermal spas, and the atmospheric 13th-century Hotel Grad Otočec on an islet in the Krka river. Nature enthusiasts can explore Triglav National Park and the stunning Lake Bled, both within reach of the capital.
