Vilnius prepares for historic 700th city anniversary
Events anticipating the big anniversary in 2023 will focus on culture, art and education. Lights shows and music will spice up the atmosphere.
Vilnius will celebrate its 700th anniversary on January 25th 2023, as the city’s birthday was included by UNESCO in its notable events list for the year to come.
Ceremonies will be huge, so preparations have already started will an entire year of cultural, artistic and educational events ahead.
A symbolic clock installation inaugurated by the Mayor of Vilnius, Remigijus Šimašius, was put in place in the Cathedral Square in order to keep track of the countdown until the big moment in 2023.
“Although Vilnius will be 700 years old, both the city and its residents are the true embodiment of a youthful curiosity, ingenuity, determination, and passion. 2023 will be a special year for Vilnius, therefore we invite everyone from all around the globe to come to our city, join us in celebrations, and experience the magic themselves”, Mayor Šimašius commented.
The city was mentioned for the first time in 1323 by the letters of Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania. The anniversary on January 25th 2023 will feature mentions about the colourful and rich history of the city in the attempt to boost the Lithuanian capital’s recognition. Shows will also be the highlights of the city’s birthday, with movies, performance festivals and AI exhibitions awaiting their guests.
Vilnius is the capital and the largest city in Lithuania with a population of 550.000.
