The special little Saxon village that enriches UNESCO world Heritage

Viscri is one of the Saxon villages in the south-eastern part of Transylvania, found on a remote side of the way that connects Brasov and Sighisoara towns in Romania. One of the most famous destinations in Romania, the little village offers an amazing opportunity to explore medieval times.

With only around 500 inhabitants, Viscri hides the most picturesque fortified church of the Saxons, part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1993. The church was built around 1100 and its grandiose structure extends the little village “frozen in time” image.

Prince Charles of Wales is one of the most involved promoters of this fairy tale Romanian location. Its foundation called “Mihai Eminescu Trust” had restored Viscri church and houses without altering their amazing architecture. The elitist Prince of Wales has bought a property here and declares himself overwhelmed by the beauty of these places. "Do not change anything, keep and love this place as it is" is the Prince's wish about Viscri.

Families here have transformed their houses into guest houses, so that you can experience the authentic Transylvanian lifestyle. The women in the village are known for their sock knitting, that slowly transformed into a local business, supported by two Germans that live here. The hand made products are sold all over Romania, Germany and can also be bought from the local coffee-shop.

While staying in Viscri, take your time to visit the fortified church and explore Transylvanian country life, as local food is delicious, people offer very hospitable accommodations and are quite friendly.

The old church was modified many times during years. The view that the top of its tower offers a great panorama over the entire village and also surrounding hills. In the 18th century some of the church rooms used to serve as a school.

Built in the XIII century, the Holy Font is the main attraction of the church and believed to be a part of the little old chapel Alba Ecclesia.

The tower's museum displays traditional tools and original costumes, decorations, furniture, crafts, books and local ceramics that reveal interesting stories about Saxon communities' life.

Once you visit these places, you will get a unique and haunting feeling of timelessness. Visitors can enjoy guided, translated workshops and tours to uncover the mysteries of this little village that stands out as one of the top tourists destination in Romania.
