X gender option now available on U.S. passport applications
Moreover, according to the Secretary of State Antony Blinken, authorities researched the most appropriate definition for “X” in the attempt to promote gender diversity inclusion among U.S. citizens. Both the State Department and the CDC worked together in order to reach a final conclusion.
"After thoughtful consideration of the research conducted and feedback from community members, we concluded that the definition of the X gender marker on State Department public forms will be 'Unspecified or another gender identity’.
"This definition is respectful of individuals’ privacy while advancing inclusion", Blinken stated.
Applicants can simply select the gender they identify with without submitting any medical documents when applying for a passport, regardless the selected gender differs from the one in their ID.
The X marker was added to passports with the occasion of the International Transgender Day of Visibility. The State Department aims to extend the X option for other documents also, starting next year.
With the latest decision, the U.S. joins the few countries in the world that have implemented a non-binary gender option for passports.
