Škoda's Autonomous Tram Milestone in Tampere

Pioneering Automated Public Transport

Škoda Group has achieved a significant milestone by demonstrating the operation of an autonomous tram in Tampere, Finland. Utilizing its innovative Smart Depot ecosystem, this demonstration highlights Škoda's rapid advancements in autonomous vehicle technology, supported by the PPF Group.

Successful Demonstration of Autonomy

Complex Tasks Executed Autonomously

During the demonstration at the Tampereen Ratikka tram depot, the tram performed complex tasks autonomously. These tasks included navigating the depot, passing through the wash line, and responding to obstacles on the tracks. The tram's operations were remotely controlled via a server application, showcasing the capabilities of the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system and the Anti-Collision System (ACS) developed specifically for Škoda trams.

Jiří Liberda's Statement

“Last year we presented the Smart Depot vision. Thanks to the continuous support of the investor and the intensive work of our developers, we were able to turn the vision into reality in just one year. The successful demonstration of automatic movement and its response in the Smart Depot ecosystem is another step on the road to a fully autonomous tram,” said Jiří Liberda, Digital Managing Director at Škoda Group.

The Smart Depot Ecosystem

Integration and Automation

Škoda's Smart Depot ecosystem integrates both existing and newly developed technologies, creating a cohesive system that automates routine processes. This integration enhances depot efficiency and safety, significantly reducing the need for manual intervention. The automation minimizes human error, optimizes services, and lowers operational costs.

Advancing Towards Full Autonomy

Future of Public Transport

This demonstration marks a substantial step towards operating fully autonomous Škoda trams. By showcasing the practical applications of its ATO and ACS systems, Škoda Group is paving the way for future advancements in autonomous public transport. The success of this project in just one year underscores the potential for rapid development and implementation of autonomous systems in the public transport sector.
