Singapore Airlines Introduces Additional Christchurch Flights for the Summer Season

News

Singapore Airlines has announced a number of important announcements regarding its desire to increase capacity on New Zealand routes.

The airline plans to add 40 additional flights to Christchurch in the coming months, on top of its daily service all year round. Air New Zealand also plans to send its Airbus A380 to Auckland within the next few months, as demand continues to grow.

Flights to Christchurch

Singapore Airlines announced it would add 40 additional flights to its Christchurch, New Zealand schedule in the next few months. Singapore Airlines will begin a new three-times weekly service on Monday, Wednesday and Friday starting November 19, for summer months in Southern Hemisphere.

The joint venture will include Air New Zealand. Gordon Bevan, the general manager of Aeronautical Development at Christchurch International Airport, said:

"South Islanders love this service as a direct flight from Christchurch Airport to Singapore's Changi Airport, then on to dozens of cities in Asia and Europe ... The airline has been our valued international partner for 37 years now. In recent years and through difficult times, the airline continued to fly here to support this city and island, so when passengers couldn't travel, our products still did."

Additional flights were added to meet the demand that skyrocketed after travel restrictions were lifted. These flights are likely to be taken by a large number of leisure travelers as well as people visiting friends and family. The additional flights to Christchurch will bring 759 seats per week to the South Island gateway, and is expected to boost business and tourism.

Auckland to get the A380

Singapore Airlines doesn't just focus on Christchurch. Singapore Airlines will deploy its Airbus A380 to Auckland from November and use it until March 20, 2024. Emirates is currently the only airline operating the superjumbo in Auckland. Singapore Airlines NZ General Manager George Robertson commented.

"The return of seasonal A380 operations marks a significant milestone in our continued recovery since borders reopened to New Zealand a little over a year ago. When SQ285 touches down in Auckland on November 23, it will be the first time our A380 has operated scheduled services to New Zealand since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020."

New Zealand being in the south of the globe, it is important to have convenient connections with destinations in the north and especially Europe. Singapore Airlines will hopefully help by adding capacity this year.
