
Abu Dhabi unveils plans for inspiring natural history museum

Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, set to welcome its first visitors in 2025, will display thousands of breathtaking natural wonders.
The latest addition to the emirate's Saadiyat Cultural District, one of the leading international cultural stages, the museum will host an immersive collection of the rarest natural history exhibits, aiming to also offer a sustainable perspective over our planet’s future, as well as promote further education and development of scientific research.
The state-of-the-art piece of the collection will be “Stan” the famous 39-foot-long and 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus Rex incredibly well preserved fossil, dating back since the Late Cretaceous Period. The galleries will also host the Murchison Meteorite specimen, which contains unique 7 billion years old “stardust” compounds.
The impressive project was created and developed by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi in partnership with Miral.
HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, commented:
"Natural history has a new home in Abu Dhabi. A new museum which tells the story of our universe through some of the most incredible natural wonders known to mankind. These are awe-inspiring gifts from nature that we are proud to share with the world – unlocking millions of years of knowledge to not only advance scientific discovery but to inspire our children to protect our planet's future.

The museum’s exhibit collection will focus on the evolution of the universe and the history of life on Earth in an unforgettable 13.8-billion-year time and space immersive journey. Guests here will be empowered to learn about different areas of study such as zoology, palaeontology, marine biology, molecular research and earth sciences, while opening the doors for future innovation and sustainability innitiatives.
The museum was designed by lead architects Mecanoo and covers a wide area of 35,000 sqm. The main focus of the architectural style of the building was the use of pentagonal shapes as the main theme of the site.
The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi will offer significant employment opportunities across the Emirate, while planning to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors and young talent to further develop culture and creative industries.
The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is set to be part of the enormous cultural heritage of the Saadiyat Cultural District, while joining one of a kind institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, Manarat Al Saadiyat, the Abrahamic Family House and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
