Amtrak’s goal: reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2045

News

The ambitious objective will target the company’s entire carbon footprint in order to enhance environmental commitment while yet providing safe services.

The move is part of the Amtrak’s sustainability strategy, as climate change affects every aspect of daily life, while collective measures are essential in order to limit emissions as well as protect both environment and society.

Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner declared:

“Not only are trains convenient and comfortable, they are also one of the most sustainable modes of transportation. With new equipment, modernized stations and net zero emissions, Amtrak can lead the drive toward sustainable transportation throughout the nation.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg added:

“We congratulate Amtrak for this ambitious commitment to further reduce its carbon footprint, cementing its place as a leader in the clean transportation revolution.

“As we continue working to implement President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we look forward to working with Amtrak to demonstrate the key role of passenger rail in fighting climate change.”

As rail transportation is expected to become the main choice of future travellers, Amtrak goals and actions will include:

- reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045
- boost energy efficiency
- limit diesel fuel use and turn to renewable fuels
- focus on research and testing
- use 100% carbon-free electricity by 2030
- continue innovation work.

Amtrak President Roger Harris said:

“We are seeing a new generation of travellers who are conscious of their environmental impact. This is providing a significant opportunity to attract rail riders well into the future.”

Between 2010 and 2019, the company has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, as well as fuel and energy use. A 40% reduction is forecasted by 2030.

Amtrak is 46% more energy efficient when compared to car travel and 34% more energy efficient compared to air travel.

Amtrak’s initiative will be supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), while the latest advances of the company can be found in the annual FY21 Sustainability Report and Performance Scorecard and via Amtrak’s Sustainability and Climate Resilience program.
