Banksy's 'Dismaland' relocated to France
The “bemusement” park of the English graffiti artist will be dismantled and relocated to France, to house migrants and refugees
After a 5 weeks run, 150.000 and $30 million of business to Weston-Super-Mare, a town in southwestern England, Dismaland exhibition closed on Sunday. People from all around the world visited the exhibition, as tickets were limited to 4.000 a day.
While visiting the park, the guests could enjoy exhibits like a dilapidated fairy castle, a distorted mermaid and a pond of migrant-filled boats, as many of the works needed “audience participation", as artist Banksy himself stated.
"A dead princess is only complete when surrounded by gawping crowds with their cameras out, or the opportunity to photograph yourself pulling an amazed expression when a killer whale leaps from a toilet," he added.
"I guess you'd say it's a theme park whose big theme is 'theme parks should have bigger themes'."
The park will be moved to the northern French town of Calais, where 5.000 African and Middle Eastern migrants and refugees are camping in a place called “the jungle”.
According to Dismaland website, the exhibition pieces will be used to build shelters for these people: "Coming soon… Dismaland Calais. All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the 'jungle' refugee camp near Calais to build shelters. No on-line tickets will be available.”
