Brussels Airport to Ditch Liquid Rules with CT Scanners by 2028

Airlines & Airports

Brussels Airport has announced a full overhaul of its passenger security screening infrastructure, with new CT scanners and body scanners set to eliminate the need to remove liquids and electronics from hand luggage during security checks.

Construction of a temporary screening platform with the new technology begins in 2027, with the first scanners operational in 2028. All 19 departure screening lanes are to be equipped with the upgraded systems by summer 2029. Scanners for transfer passenger screening will follow in a later phase.

Under current European regulations, the new CT scanners will allow passengers to carry liquids in containers of up to two litres — compared to the current 100ml limit — without removing them from their bags. Electronics such as laptops and tablets will also no longer need to be taken out of hand luggage.

A first test with a body scanner is scheduled for June 2026, with planning and preparatory work continuing throughout the year ahead of construction starting in 2027.

"With this new technology, we will not only continue to ensure safety, but also make security screening even smoother and easier for our passengers," said Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport. The investment will also increase lane capacity to accommodate future passenger growth.

The project forms part of Hub 3.0, Brussels Airport's broader programme to modernise the passenger experience and expand capacity at the airport.
