Eurowings announces an innovative travel experience with the launch of hot air balloon flights from Dusseldorf to Mallorca, starting July 8, 2024.

Eurowings Embarks on Adventure with Hot Air Balloon Flights to Mallorca

In an unprecedented move, Eurowings is expanding its horizons by venturing into the hot air ballooning sector, offering a novel travel option for adventure-seekers heading to Palma de Mallorca from Dusseldorf. This initiative, set to commence with the summer school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia on July 8, 2024, aims to alleviate the growing capacity bottlenecks on flights to one of Europe's most beloved destinations.

With the conventional aviation industry facing a shortage of new aircraft, Eurowings' innovative approach not only challenges aircraft manufacturers but also caters to the increasing demand for unique travel experiences. The introduction of hot air balloon flights allows passengers to enjoy the scenic beauty of the journey to Mallorca in a distinctive and leisurely manner.

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof expressed excitement about leading the European airline industry in offering such an innovative mode of travel. Emphasizing the romantic and memorable aspects of ballooning, Bischof acknowledges the longer travel time to Mallorca as a worthwhile trade-off for the unique experience it offers.

Lars Redeligx, CEO of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH, highlighted the forward-thinking nature of the initiative, which aligns with the airport's sustainable travel goals. The introduction of a vertiport at Dusseldorf Airport for balloon flights, alongside the existing helicopter landing pad, marks a significant step toward operationalizing this vision.

To kickstart this new venture, Eurowings has placed an order for five hot air balloons, with options for ten more. These balloons are equipped with powerful burners and newly developed engines to enhance long-haul travel efficiency. Capable of carrying up to twelve passengers, the balloon baskets boast hand-woven craftsmanship and include a pilot's bar for an added touch of luxury.

Eurowings assures that all safety and maintenance standards applicable to conventional aircraft will be upheld for the balloon fleet. With experienced pilots at the helm, the airline is committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of its passengers throughout their journey.

Given the weather-dependent nature of hot air balloon flights, Eurowings will offer these flights on Mondays and Thursdays, with the understanding that schedules may be adjusted based on weather conditions. Tickets are set to go on sale on April 24, with one-way fares starting at 599 euros.

This venture into hot air ballooning by Eurowings represents a bold step in enriching the travel landscape, offering passengers an unforgettable journey to one of the Mediterranean's most sought-after destinations.
