Experience the Resurrection of a Forgotten Fantasy Theme Park in Los Angeles

Entertainment

Multi-talented Drake is bringing back to life the Fantasy Theme Park in Los Angeles.

If there's one individual skilled at enjoying life, it's Drake. The multi-talented artist, also known as a former Degrassi star, is showcasing both his entertainment and artistic prowess simultaneously by investing in and revitalizing a long-neglected theme park.

The deserted park made its debut in Hamburg, Germany, back in 1987. Originated by André Heller, who had engaged artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and others, it was initially named the "fairground of sensations" and "the museum of the future."

As per the Los Angeles Times, Luna Luna's impeccably conserved amusement rides were retired from their original location and stored in a Texas facility for over three decades. Drake, along with his entertainment company DreamCrew, acquired these rides and dedicated substantial funds, exceeding $100 million in total, to recreate a park-like setting in Los Angeles, as reported by Hyperallergic.

The reimagined park, titled "Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy," is scheduled to unveil to the public this month and continue until the spring of 2024 in a vast, 60,000-square-foot complex.

However, a crucial note accompanies this endeavor. Visitors won't have the chance to ride Basquiat's Ferris wheel or Haring's carousel. While these artworks are within close reach, they are exceptionally valuable and rare pieces of art, after all.

Nonetheless, Drake's company, according to the LA Times, aims to transform the art showcase into an authentic carnival experience, with performers meandering through the warehouse space. Attendees can stroll through Salvador Dalí's "Dalídom," a geodesic dome serving as an extraordinary funhouse.

“The luna park is always a dream space,” remarked Helen Molesworth, the park’s curatorial adviser, to the LA Times. “It’s like someone goes around and untightens the screws of your need to behave, your need to be good, your need to be smart, your need to be proper. Someone just untightens those four screws, and you can think different things and feel different things. You can tap into whatever it is in you that you locked up, whether it’s your childhood or sense of adventure or desire to be scared or desire to be bamboozled."

Although ticket prices are currently undisclosed on the attraction’s website, interested individuals can register their email for notification when ticket sales become available to the public.

If a visit to Los Angeles isn't feasible in the coming months, fret not. DreamCrew assured in a statement to the LA Times, “Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy is the first installment of what will be a long-term project with a multi-faceted approach exploring the world of art and its intersection with today’s modern world.” Anticipate the arrival of numerous fantastical parks in the future.
