Fees For Using the Train in France Have Just Gone Up

News

In 2023, SNCF, France's national rail service, will charge more for train travel.

Fares on the national rail network in France will go up in 2023. Many routes were impacted by the price increase announced this week. But the company also started a flash sale, so for a limited time, passengers could buy cheap tickets.

Generally speaking, ticket costs have increased by around five percent. With the exception of some seasonal tickets and low-cost services, several fare categories have been considerably impacted.

Due to rising energy costs, the train network announced the fare increases since November. CEO of SNCF Voyageurs Christophe Fanichet said that the organization faces higher expenditures of 13 per cent in 2023. He also said that the company's electrical costs had increased by a whopping 180%.

Where can I find the most costly train tickets in France this year?

The most expensive tickets, those purchased at the last minute, will be the ones most impacted by the price surge. Like the cost of a ticket on the TGV or the Intercity, the premium category known as "Business Premiere" has increased by around five percent.

Price adjustments will be done using a marketing strategy called "yield management," which adjusts rates based on fluctuating demand and when such changes are implemented.

However, certain fares have been exempted from the price hikes. SNCF's low-cost service, Ouigo trains, have not seen fare increases. The price of the Carte Avantage concession card, for example, will stay at €49. In addition, the minimum ticket pricing at the beginning of the promotions will remain unchanged. The train company claims this is done to protect low-income riders from drastic fare increases.

On Monday, the new, higher train fares went into effect. Conversely, a last minute sale was also disclosed by the national train operator. Connect Days is a promotion run by SNCF wherein low-cost tickets may be purchased at a discount on their homepage. Moreover, discounted tickets for Ouigo trains will go on sale today.

For the month of January, the maximum cost of a trip between Paris and any other city is €19.
