Flight Attendants At American Airlines Prepare To Strike

Airlines & Airports

Union officials representing American Airlines flight attendants have requested that the airline absolve them of any future negotiating duties.

If the National Mediation Board approves the request, the Railway Labour Act, which regulates labour disputes in the airline sector, would enable the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) to go on strike following a 30-day cooling-down process.

A recent statement from APFA explained that the association was taking this move because flight staff is weary of waiting and tired of the general disrespect from the airline. Employees are opposing corporate avarice and demanding better working conditions.

In a four-year contract, the organization is requesting a 50% increase in wages. An APFA report states that American has proposed a 19% increase over a five-year period. A rise in the stipulated amount of paid hours its members get each month from 75 to 80 is only one of several contract modifications that the union is requesting.

During last week's federally monitored mediations in Phoenix, the union said that American's executives have failed to provide a revised offer. However, the airline denies that claim. The corporation said that since negotiating resumed in 2021, they have regularly met with APFA and offered ideas that uphold their commitment to providing their employees competitive wages. Additionally, American stressed that a strike around the holidays this year is completely out of the question.

In a statement sent to the National Mediation Board, APFA president Julie Hedrick said that the union's members had not been paid a raise since January of 2019.
